Vanessa Gonzalez is slightly unstoppable. Her one-person show I Don’t Know Words, just finished up a tour, including a headlining sketch spot at Boston’s Women in Comedy Festival. Vanessa is making her double debut at ASF – also taking the stage as a member of the group Bad Example.

“I Don’t Know Words” is a well-traveled show. Where else have you performed it?

Vanessa Gonzalez: Yeah, I took the show on tour last month. I took it to Dallas (Dallas Comedy House), Chicago (Playground Theater and pH Theater), Pittsburgh (Arcade Theater), Richmond (Coalition Theater), New Orleans (The New Movement) and Houston (Station Theater).

Is there anything you learned from playing different venues?

Vanessa: Yeah, it was really cool seeing different reactions in each city to some sketches. Most were consistently well received but some were funny in some cities and maybe too dark for other cities.

What is it about a one-person sketch show that attracted you as opposed to working these out with a group?

Vanessa: I’ve been working with sketch groups for a long time now. I love it. I’ve recently been working with Stupid Time Machine (New Orleans), HANDBOMB and Bad Example. A solo sketch show just seemed like a fun challenge. I also knew that I wanted to do a show run and tour and it was just easier to set that up being the only person in the show.

What is your writing process?

Vanessa: I get inspiration from the most random things like phases, songs, costumes, etc. I usually start small and build a character and/or world around that.

Can you give an example?

Vanessa: I have a sketched called “Anniversary” that was created based off the Tony Toni Tone song “Anniversary.” The song basically says “It’s our anniversary” over and over again. I thought it would be fun to build off of that and celebrate the anniversary of something not so traditional by using the song and sexy dance moves.

What are you looking forward to at ASF?

Vanessa: It’s my first year performing in it! I’m super excited about it. I’ve gone as an audience member in the past but I can’t wait to be a part of it this year with I Don’t Know Words and Bad Example.
